GFDS Engineers
When Autodesk combined with Softdesk and decided not to support the structural engineering aspect of the add-on software for AutoCAD, GFDS Engineers was planning on upgrading to the latest Auto CAD version (when R14 wasn't going to be supported anymore or upgradeable), put the new version ont he shefl and continue to use their old (R14)version of AutoCAD as long as possible solely because R14 was the last version that works with Softdesk. We relied on Softdesk for so many things such as steel welding symbols, concrete reinforcenment layouts, steel beam sections and details, wood framing memebers, wood metal fasteners, bolts, nails and other structural shapes, members and connections.

After finding out that Architectural Desktop did not meet our specific structural related needs, we decided to look in a different direction. We called our CAD consultant, Mark Middlebrook , and he referred us to Arthur Shao, who was working on something promising that he built from the ground up and would satisfy some of our specific CAD needs. We contacted Arthur, he gave us a demonstration which impressed everyone here at GFDS Engineers. He provided us with a program that works with the latest versions of AutoCAD (2002 and 2004). SCAD takes care of our layering system, provides us with structural steel shape member sections and elevations, steel welding symbols, steel decking, wood member sections, concrete reinforcement detailing, bolts and other fasteners, leaders and section marks and revision marks.

His SCAD program has helped us greatly, and we have constantly updated him with reports of bugs and fixes and requests of additional features. The SCAD program is still an evolving program, but has definitely had a positive impact in our CAD productivity here at GFDS Engineers.
